Play-Based Learning Through Storytelling to Improve Foundational Numeracy in Kenya and Malawi

This proof-of-concept study explored the potential of storytelling to improve foundational numeracy among Grade 2 learners aged 6–8 years in Kenya and Malawi. Implemented by Action Foundation (TAF), Rays of Hope (ROH), and eBASE Africa, the project used oral, paper-based, and digital storytelling to make mathematics more engaging, inclusive, and accessible, particularly for children with disabilities and learners in low-resource settings.

The evaluation compared storytelling alone, storytelling supported by the Somesha App, and a control group across 10 schools involving 500 learners.
